Exploring the Famous Wonders of Springfield, Missouri

Feb 5, 2023 | Lifestyle, Springfield

Located in the wonderful Ozarks region of the United States, Springfield, Missouri is a place of charm, history, and beauty. It’s hard to believe that such a small city could have so much to offer. So what is The Queen City of the Ozarks famous for? Turns out, a whole lot.

Let’s take a look at some of the things this city has to offer.

Springfield, A City with Character

Springfield is home to many historical sites and buildings that are worth exploring. Ever heard of Route 66? Springfield is its birthplace. The Gillioz Theatre was built in 1926 and remains one of the oldest theaters in town. If you’re into architecture, be sure to check out the Pythian Castle, a massive castle-like structure built in 1913 as a meeting hall for fraternal organizations.

And if you’d like to explore some of the more modern architecture around town, check out Park Central Square – an iconic downtown square surrounded by art galleries, restaurants, shops and more. Finally, Springfield is home to a vibrant graffiti mural scene.

The Birthplace of Route 66

Originally constructed in 1926, “The Mother Road” was one of the first roads in America built for automobile traffic and became a vital link between Chicago and Los Angeles. It transformed the experience of traveling through America, allowing people to explore countless roads that branched off from its path.

To this day, Route 66 remains an important symbol of America to many around the globe, celebrated through art, literature, music and film. A visit to Springfield isn’t complete without popping by the iconic landmarks related to this great highway!

The Gillioz Theatre

One of Springfield’s most notable cultural landmarks is The Gillioz Theatre, an iconic Art Deco-style performing arts theater built in 1926. Located in historic downtown Springfield, this beloved community music and theatre venue boasts beautiful Spanish Baroque design details, lush velvet upholstery, breathtaking murals, and ornate chandeliers throughout the facility.

The theater has seen performances featuring artists such as Willie Nelson, Mumford & Sons, Johnny Cash, and Roy Orbison. It also hosts live concerts from local acts and popular festivals like the Alamo Drafthouse Film Festival, Art Crawls & Markets, Black History Month Events and Stand-Up for Mental Health Comedy Shows.

Today it still lives up to its original purpose, serving its members’ needs and providing an ideal venue for various events such as weddings, receptions, private parties and more. And for those interested in exploring what makes Springfield a great city, guided tours are available during select periods throughout the year!

World’s 2nd Largest Fork

Springfield also offers a unique claim to fame – its big fork! While this may seem an odd prank at first, it is actually quite serious business! Contrary to popular belief, not all forks found in Springfield are bigger than those found anywhere else.

However, those manufactured by local blacksmith Amos Hymen certainly are! Originally created for the early settlers that made the town their home many years ago, Hymen’s signature “big fork” has now become somewhat of an icon for genuine Springfield pride.

When visiting Springfield today, make sure you look out for these classic artifacts- they make great additions to any memorabilia collection!

That’s right – every single one of these murals was designed and painted by someone who lives and works in Springfield. This is part of what makes the city’s mural scene so special – it’s truly a community effort. Not only do the murals add beauty and interest to the cityscape, but they also give local artists a chance to showcase their talents.
